Storage virtualisation has been available for some time but is yet to be widely adopted. Many major vendors are now entering this market with virtualisation 'appliances'. We expect to see rapid development of this technology.

Virtualisation is a layer of software that converts islands of disparate storage into networked storage pools. This enables easy allocation of storage capacity from any vendors’ storage to any open system on an as needed basis, using a simple drag-and-drop interface.

Key benefits of Storage Virtualisation:

  • Increased Disk Utilisation - From our own experience and industry sources, organisations may only be using between 40% to 60% of useful disk utilisation. Virtualisation can increase this to 90% representing a substantial buy-back of existing disk space.
  • Non-disruptive storage allocation - Downtime attributable to adding, replicating, reassigning and upgrading storage can be eliminated.
  • Improved utilisation of administration staff - By centralising the management of the virtualised storage pool, the amount of storage that an IT administrator can manage increases by up to 10 times.
  • Data Redundancy - Data redundancy is provided for the virtualisation management server by using either n+1 or clustering. The management facility for virtualisation can be built around either a windows, Linux or Unix operating system.
  • Snapshots - Capturing point-in-time images of online data is becoming more popular, but more conventional snapshot products are restricted to a single host or a single subsystem. That often means using premium resources for copies generally needed for version testing, disaster recovery and LAN free/server-less backups - operations better suited to less-costly devices.

Call NexStor now for advice on our Storage Virtualisation Solutions

Did you know that unstructured data makes up over 80% of an organisations information store? Did you also know that on average over 85% of this data as not been look at/opened in over 90 days?

Imagine the impact on your IT environment if you could remove this static data from both your primary storage and backup regime? NexStor can offer a solution that will allow you to send multiple copies of these “old” files to multiple remote locations at the same time.
