HT FileStore is a policy based automated storage management system that analyzes, monitors, and reports on primary disk utilization. The system automatically copies and repositions data based on IT policies to a full range of secondary storage targets. HT FileStore enables the data management lifecycle strategy. It lets IT define and enforce unlimited rules for any logical data set to ensure that: 1) primary disk is optimally utilized, 2) secondary copies of data exist on any combination of media and at multiple locations in compliance with internal and external data availability standards, and 3) archived data is accessible either transparently or “actively” depending on end-user and application needs. HT FileStore is storage agnostic, providing unlimited flexibility for selecting and deploying different types of storage media throughout the evolution of your data lifecyle management strategy.

HT FileStore has advantages over more limited HSM products. It automates storage management actions using more granular and sophisticated analysis of the file system. Its policy engine drives a more sophisticated range of actions including:

  • Scanning and reporting across the file system.
  • Deleting unwanted files according to predefined policy.
  • Archiving data to secondary storage for data protection and compliance purposes, without modifying source copy.
  • “Active archiving” of files from primary storage to secondary storage, providing a full index online for easy user access.
  • Transparent archiving through stubbing of files from primary storage, freeing up expensive primary storage capacity while maintaining normal end-user and application access to data.
  • Managing file retention periods, protecting data from unauthorized access, and complete auditing of all file access and file movement (“compliant archive”).
  • Automating end-user defined actions such as in-place compression.
  • Automatic or manual operation.

HT FileStore adds robustness to the storage management infrastructure. Its integration into the HT ISM platform can greatly reduce the extent to which resource intensive backup and replication procedures are run for disaster recovery and business continuance requirements. Unlike HSM products whose use of stubbing can increase the possibility of data loss, HT FileStore also ensures data integrity by maintaining complete meta-data records in its underlying database, tracking all data it has copied or re-positioned to secondary storage, and providing easy querying of its archive contents.
